Travel Hacks: How I Survived a 24-Hour Flight.

Secret’s out: The travel blogger is not a fan of flying.

Crying babies. Zero leg room. The “reclining” seats? Can they even be considered that?! Not my idea of a good time. And yet, this past December, I still proceeded to board a 24-hour flight to Australia.

Miami –> Atlanta –> Los Angeles –> Sydney

I wanted to do anything I could to travel as easily & comfortably as humanly possible.

Here were some of the ways that I found helped me:

      • Podcasts. I can thank my co-worker, Stephanie, for getting me hooked on these. It started with Serial, and all went downhill from there! Lately, I’ve been listening to are Love + Radio, The Heart, Invisibilia, Stuff You Should Know, and StartupCamp. They range from super quirky to very informative, and are one of my favorite ways to pass time when traveling, whether it be by car, train, or plane.

      • Sleep Medicine. I suppose this one’s relatively obvious, but Nyquil helped me a LOT during the 14-hour home stretch of the flight from LA to Sydney. I have a really tough time sleeping on planes, even when I’m dead tired, but this helped me get a bit of shut-eye for the adventure ahead. I woke up shortly before we landed, feeling pretty alright, and didn’t really even experience much jet-lag, despite the massive time difference. Some other suggestions I’ve heard from friends and fellow travelers are Dramamine & Nytol. They swear by them!

I’ll be honest, taking a flight like that isn’t for everyone. I got very, very restless and crampy. Watched 5 movies in a row, and listened to my favorite Kings of Leon album back to back to back. Read a whole book. Ate and drank at every possible opportunity. Found myself checking the time way too often, literally counting down the hours, minutes, and then seconds until I could spot the Sydney harbour from my window.

But you know what? The destination was SO worth it.

What do you guys do to bust boredom on a long flight? I’m always looking for new ways to keep myself occupied, so I’d love to hear your suggestions!

A 24 hour flight is what’s really put me off flying to Australia! I start to get cabin fever on just a 12 hour flight… great tips though. Like you, I can’t sleep either unless I take a sleeping tablet and Nytol is my choice. I’d never thought to take my colouring-in book with me. Might do that on my next long haul flight 🙂

I was dreading it, Kirsty! But it’s do-able 🙂 Just have to find a few ways to keep yourself comfortable & busy. The coloring book works wonders for me!
