Culture: A massive backpacking community. Street art everywhere. The language. Sunday sessions. I loved it all!
Being told that my accent is beautiful: The first time I heard it, I was definitely caught off guard, haha. Turns out Australians love our accents just as much as we love theirs. <3
The Sights: Sitting on the steps of the Opera House, walking across Darling Harbour, and driving down the Great Ocean Road were all so incredibly surreal for me; things you always dream of doing, but don’t think you’ll ever actually get the chance to see.
Not tipping: Literally had to remind myself not to do so every time we went into a restaurant. It’s such second nature for me by now.
Food and drink: It was all so damn good! Tons of yummy street food, some of the best coffee I’ve ever had, plenty of fellow beer snobs (the good kind!) and….TIM TAMS <3 I brought them home to pretty much everyone I knew.
Public Transportation: Very reliable and affordable. We were big fans! Pretty sure we now know how to better navigate Australia’s system than our own.
The Australian Dollar: So colorful! Makes ours seem so boring in comparison. It didn’t hurt that ours went a liiittle bit further there, too 😉
And of course, there are a couple of things that I don’t miss as well…Driving on the opposite road, for instance. Do you know how many times I went to hop in an Uber or cab and by default, went to the wrong side? *sigh* embarassing. And Vegemite? I was so excited to try it, only to be pretty appalled at first bite. It must be an acquired taste, that’s all I have to say.
Any Americans travel to Australia recently? Can you relate? What do you miss about this beautful country? I’d love to hear in the comments below!
