New York

In many respects, New York is often seen as the cultural capital of the United States. The fact is, this is one of the most diverse and fascinating areas of the country that you can ever possibly hope to visit. No matter what it is that you hope to get out of your US trip, chances are that New York can offer it to some degree or another. There are so many reasons to visit New York that it is difficult to know where to begin in listing them.

First of all, this is a famous destination for those who love to shop. With more shopping districts than you can possibly imagine, you are unlikely to have any trouble finding what you want here. But that’s not all that New York has to offer. One of its main delights is the huge number of museums and art galleries, including some of the best in the world – the Guggenheim, for example, is still home to a number of original Warhols, & that alone should be reason enough to visit.

Of course, New York is not just for shoppers and art lovers. If you are someone who enjoys a bite to eat at a fancy restaurant, then you will feel spoiled for choice in this city, with its countless restaurants and diners offering a wide array of incredible food. What’s more, if you are travelling on a budget, you can easily stay in some of the hostels that are dotted around the city. These are relatively nice stays, and you are likely to save a lot of money. If you have always wanted to see the statue of liberty, why not take a trip to New York this year?

Many of the best US destinations are famous for having their own particular style. Often this style relates to its art or its music. Seattle is the perfect example of this. Among all its other great benefits, one thing that Seattle is famous for, and which can be a real delight for any passing visitors, is its music scene. The Seattle music scene is already well-established, with a proud history of various kinds of genres. This was the setting for the grunge explosion in the late eighties and early nineties, let’s not forget – but that’s not the only music that fares well here. You also have a burgeoning jazz culture, making Seattle the ideal destination for any wannabe Charles Mingus’ out there.

Of course, music is not the only reason you might want to visit Seattle. On the whole, this is a sprawling, fascinating and diverse city, and its skyline is one of the most famous in the world. Although you might want to be fairly careful what time of year you visit (rain is a big problem in this city), whenever you do go, you are bound to be regaled by the many different kinds of entertainment that are on offer. And let’s not forget that Seattle has as many famous landmarks as the best of them – who doesn’t want to go to the top of the Space Needle at least once?

Technology also plays a big role in the wide reaches of this city, and if you consider yourself something of a nerd, you might be pleasantly surprised at how many technology businesses there are in Seattle. Probably the most famous is Microsoft, whose headquarters offer a grand tour for a relatively small price – a great day out for the geekier traveller. With a huge number of sights to see, plenty of places to eat and a local economy that means you will save a buck or two, this has to be one of the best US destinations around.

Las Vegas

One of the beauties of US travel is that there are so many different kinds of culture to explore. We have already looked at New York and Seattle – both offering their own take on music, theatre and dance – but another famous destination with a unique brand of culture is that tourist-favourite: Las Vegas.

Las Vegas has long been a favourite of US citizens and those from abroad alike, and part of the reason for its wide appeal is that it seems to offer a whole other kind of experience to the rest of the country – and possibly even the world. For one thing, the way in which this city is structured means that you are always going to feel as though you are having a good time. It is practically designed so that you won’t want to leave – and that is a great way to ensure that you enjoy your holiday. But what are the unique benefits & fascinations that Las Vegas has to offer?

This is a destination founded on image. If you want to see micro versions of pretty much any famous landmark in the world, then this is the place to see it. This artifice has delighted countless visitors for many years, but that is not all that you can expect to see and experience if you visit Las Vegas. Famously, it is the world’s home of gambling, the one place where you can lose yourself in the casino for days at a time. This can be an enjoyable way to spend some time – and some money – for any traveller, but despite what you might think, this is not all there is. Las Vegas actually has a lot more to offer than just gambling.

If you are looking for a different kind of entertainment altogether, then you are in luck. You can choose to see a concert there, go and watch some of the best magicians in the world perform on stage, witness death-defying stunts out in the streets…whatever that you would like to see, chances are Las Vegas can offer it in some form or another. Truly, this is one destination that has it all, and anyone traveling around the US simply has to visit it at least once.

San Francisco

Although a relatively young nation, there are spots around the country which already have a fair bit of history packed into them. San Francisco is one such area, and most of its more interesting history is still relatively recent. Above all, this is the famous home turf of the hippies of the 60’s  and 70’s, Haight-Ashbury being one of the main areas for the counter-culture around that time. If you wander its snaking streets today, you will still find plenty of evidence of this culture, partly in the residue of the hippie movement itself, and partly from the shops and cafes which pay homage to it for the benefit of the tourists. If you have ever considered yourself a bit of a hippie, then a visit to San Fran is necessary at least once in your life.

More to the point, you are bound to be treated well. This is one city in the US which is well-known for its friendly population; it has an arty, free-spirit vibe still lingering to this day, and if you are particularly attuned to that kind of culture, you are bound to enjoy this city. Of course, no one place is entirely formed on the back of one kind of culture, and there are also many other reasons to visit San Francisco which have nothing to do with that aspect of its history at all. A good example of such a reason would be the famous island prison of Alcatraz. Long since abandoned, you can now take day-tours around this infamously stoic prison, and even witness a day in the life of an inmate there. Although one of its most famous landmarks, it is probable that the golden gates are even more so – and that is one sight that you simply can’t miss, wherever you might be standing in this fair city.

No matter what your overall itinerary looks like, if you are planning on traveling around the US this year, a visit to San Francisco is bound to be the proverbial cherry on top.
