If you ask people where in the States they have visited previously, the general theme will probably be Florida, New York City, and maybe California, as a general rule. But there is so much more to this magnificent country than huge food portions, Disneyland, and the Empire State Building. There is beautiful scenery, incredible food, and some fantastic music to experience too. If you’re thinking about a trip elsewhere in the good old US of A, but you fancy heading off the beaten track, here are four places guaranteed to impress.

City Break: New Orleans

If you’re a fan of the city break, but NYC is too obvious, overdone, or just hectic, then head down south for a bit of their laid back charm. When you’re exploring New Orleans, it comes as no surprise to find that the locals call it the Big Easy. With jazz and food at the center of their universe, it’s a city break like no other. Head out on the cute little streetcar to visit the beautiful houses of the Garden District, eat beignets on the Mississippi, and catch a jazz show at the Maple Leaf. If you want to head out of the city, swamp and plantation tours are really popular. Just remember, if you’re planning on heading down around Mardis Gras, be sure to take your party clothes.

From the Ocean: Alaska

If you fancy something a bit more laid back, Alaska might well be the state for you. With incredible scenery, a vast array of wildlife, and some of the friendliest locals, it’s becoming a popular destination for adventurers. If you truly want to experience the Last Frontier, the best way to see it is by sea. Alaskan cruises give you the opportunity to see all the wildlife and scenery your heart could desire, as well as stops in buzzing cities such as Anchorage or Juneau, with all the comfort and fun of a cruise ship to come back to.

For Scenery: Montana

Many people will head to Yellowstone or Yosemite for a beautiful national park experience, which means that places like Glacier National Park in Montana are left almost entirely unspoiled for the rest of us. Known as America’s Switzerland, it’s all snow-capped mountains and crystal blue alpine lakes as far as the eye can see, and it’s completely breathtaking. Be sure to take a wooden boat tour on the lakes, and walk at least some of the 700 miles of trails through the forests and mountains.

For a Party: Portland

They say that the party is in Miami or LA, but Portland, Oregon is where the real party is at. With amazing food, a hip music scene, and more breweries than you can shake a stick at, if you’re looking for a party with attitude and individuality, Portland really is the place to be. There’s a good reason that their slogan is “keep Portland weird”, and you need to experience it for yourself.

So what are you waiting for? Head off the beaten track and discover the real treasures that the States can offer.
